THE ISLAND OF CORFU

corfuCorfu is full of many wonderful places to visit and plenty of things to occupy your time whilst you are visiting.  Corfu is a friendly and relaxed place which relies upon the tourist trade to bring in many of the Corfu citizens annual incomes.  As such, everyone you'll meet on Corfu is likely to be friendly and accommodating.  The island has many small villages and towns, the largest being the city of Corfu itself; and also has a large selection of beaches and mountains to keep visitors busy.

If you are staying in Corfu Town (known as Kerkyra on the island), you are ideally positioned to catch small local ferries and boats to the other Ionian islands (such as Levkas, Zakynthos and Kefalonia).  You can also easily visit the coast of Albania from Corfu, as it is nearby.  Other options you may want to consider whilst staying in Corfu Town include a trip to Achielleion, the palace built by the Austrian Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria; a visit to Aqualand, a small waterpark with rides and slides ideal for a hot summer's day; or visits to the many small villages and beaches that make Corfu special – Roda, Barbati and Agni are all recommended.  You may simply want to wander through the old town area of Corfu Town itself – it has recently been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is a great reflection on Corfu's daily life.

Corfu boasts a great archaeological museum (with temples and excavation finds) and an equally interesting museum that commemorates the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias.
