THE ISLAND OF CORFU

corfuCorfu has a rich culture and many fun and unique festivals and celebrations which make island living a real adventure.

With so many different nations calling Corfu their own at one point or another, it is not surprising that there are so many different sorts of food and produce available.  Whilst Corfu has a great selection of Greek and Ionian restaurants and eateries, it is also home to British and Italian cuisine, as well as  having several Chinese, Indian and other regional-food-based restaurants.  Some of the foods you may want to sample whilst visiting Corfu include: Sofrito (a meal that was originally Venetian); Savoro (a herbed fish dish); Pastitsada (beef and tomato served with pasta); Corfu sausages; Koum Kouat fruit; Mandolato (similar to baklava); Tiganites (similar to loykoymades); and tsitsibeera (the Corfu version of ginger beer).

Easter is an important time of year in Corfu, and is celebrated with a week-long festival known as Holy Week.  Music by the many bands that call Corfu home features heavily in the festival.  Another important feature of Corfu's annual calendar is Ta Karnavalia, an almost identical celebration as Carnivale, Venice's feature event.  Costumes and masks are the order of the festival, which also includes parades and parties.

Corfu is also a great place to shop, with many souvenir stores and other specialty shops which sell jewellery, leather-ware and wood-based objects.  Corfu needlework is also famous, and can make a lovely gift for those who are unable to come vacationing with you!
