THE ISLAND OF CORFU

corfuCorfu, or as it is known locally, Kerkyra, has a rich and extensive history that has seen it be occupied by many non-Greek forces.  As such, the island has a diverse culture and the locals, who now make their living from the tourism industry, are particularly welcoming towards travelers.  The corruption of the name Kerkyra translates to 'city of the peaks', and this is an apt description of the island as Corfu has a mountainous and varied terrain.  The island has it's highest elevations in the north, where its famous peaks (including Mount Pantokrator) dominate the skyline.  To the south, Corfu verges into a narrow but quite sandy island with plenty of beaches and flat, open spaces.  Creeks and rivers flow throughout Corfu, and the region known as 'Emerald Valley' is particularly beautiful. Have a look athis Map of Corfu if you would like to see the size and location of the island.

The island of Corfu is located in the Adriatic Sea to the west of mainland Greece.  Corfu's location to the south of Albania (and the Sarande region) and to the east of Italy make it an ideal spot to venture out into the surrounding region.  Corfu is also well serviced by transport – the main airport, Ioannis Kapodistrias (IATA), receives flights from Aegean and Olympic airlines direct from Athens.  In many months of the year, other international carriers also fly into Corfu, including EasyJet.  Corfu is also serviced by long-distance ferries from places such as Venice, and many of the big cruise ships that travel the Mediterranean also stop off in Corfu's main harbour.
